Our small two bedroom home is about to get a whole lot smaller and I've been racking my brain trying to think up ways that we can save on space.
I came across this great idea on Martha Stewart for building your own "Closet on Wheels" - an under the bed storage solution.
Here's how you do it:
The space under your bed can be put to sensible use with these bins, made by attaching casters to a wooden box, a drawer from a chest, or a wine crate. To determine how high your box should be, measure from bed frame to floor, and subtract 1 1/2 inches (for clearance) plus the height of the casters. You will need one box (painted, if desired); four casters with mounting screws; a 12-inch-long piece of 1-inch-wide cotton-twill tape; and two upholstery tacks. If the bottom of the drawer or box you're using is thin, reinforce the corners with triangles of thin wood attached with wood glue before mounting the casters. Drill holes for casters with a bit slightly smaller than the screws, and screw casters in place. To make a pull handle, fold the twill tape into a loop with cut ends together, then fold raw edges over twice by 3/4 inch. Place folded ends inside box at center front, 1 inch below top. Hammer tacks through folded tape.
Alternatively, a cheaper solution is this Ikea Skubb Storage Case (see below). At only $12.99 the price can't be beat.
I think I'll probably go with the Ikea Skubb Case. It's affordable, can be cleaned easily, folded up and tucked away when I get tired of it. Great place to store winter clothes, shoes, or even sheets and towels.
